Home Safety & Independence Guide
Everyday Fixes
☐ Brighten the bulbs – Use daylight-style bulbs in hallways, bathrooms, and stairways.
☐ Motion-detect night lights – Place in bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms for safe late-night trips and always one outside the front door.
☐ Clear the floor – Remove or secure rugs, tuck cords away, widen walking paths.
☐ Add grab zones – Install grab bars in bathrooms, bedrooms, and at any entry with a threshold- even the patio door.
☐ Right tools, right size – Keep walkers/canes on each level of the home- easy reach.
Comfort & Independence
☐ Walker check-up – Have them adjusted for height regularly, check brakes and grips. Walkers are for walking, not leaning.
☐ Sit and stand with ease – Choose sturdy chairs, raised toilet seats, or taller toilet bowls (skip padded seats) go with the booster for the bowl.
☐ Safer sipping – Switch to plastic or weighted cups for shaky hands. Add bendable straws for ease and perhaps the expanding pads for utensils.
☐ Simple timekeepers – Use talking button clocks or large-face clocks for failing eyesight.
Fall & Winter Watchouts
☐ Light the outside – Motion-sensor or solar path lights reduce icy fall risks.
☐ Salt at the ready – Keep a bucket of salt/sand by the door. Sweep or use a leaf blower for light snow, find someone who can help now-before the snow.
☐ Breathe easier – Replace furnace filters often to improve air quality.
☐ Test alarms – Replace batteries in smoke/CO detectors when clocks change.
Smart Support Systems
☐ Auto-ship essentials – Toilet paper, paper towels, pet food, and basics delivered automatically. Check with pharmacy-get 90 day prescriptions or auto ship.
☐ Weekly check-in system – Set a reminder to call every 7–10 days, collect a grocery list, and place a delivery order.
☐ Write a 'Phone Book' – Large Print favorite numbers (siblings, children, neighbors, doctors) and tape it by the phone.
☐ Post emergency contacts – Post a visible list of 2–3 key contacts where emergency responders will see it.
Talk It Through
☐ What if you fall? – Ask: How would you get to a phone? Who would you call? Practice safe standing from the ground.
☐ Emergency plan – Make sure there’s a neighbor, friend, or family member on call.
☐ Keep a pill list handy – Maintain an up-to-date medication list in a wallet, purse, or with the care provider.
